Description

Lois DeBerry was the second African American woman elected to the Tennessee General Assembly in 1972 and was one of the longest serving female lawmakers in national politics. DeBerry was the first female speaker pro tempore in the House and gained legislative support from both parties. DeBerry was so well known she gave longtime friend Al Gore a inspiring presidential nomination speech at the 2000 Democratic National Convention. DeBerry was a renowned partner and ally for the city of Memphis and state of Tennessee. DeBerry passed away at the age of 68 and served the state since 1972. She served in the Legislature during her illness and chemotherapy treatments.
