Description

This newspaper article is about Lois DeBerry and how she was running for her first political office unopposed for democratic seat. She was elected to the Tennessee General Assembly in 1972. Miss DeBerry was the second black woman to be elected to the Tennessee General Assembly. DeBerry had the support of Harold Ford Sr. when she beat out four male opponents. She held office in the 88th Tennessee General Assembly from 1973 until her death and was one of the longest serving lawmakers in the nation. DeBerry was known for supporting legislation that benefited poor people, children, senior citizens and college students.
