Description

The news article is about Lois DeBerry and the unhappiness that she felt about Tennessee’s job market. Unhappy with the unemployment offices in Shelby County and displeased with legislators Bill Reid and Paul Gurley, DeBerry suggested that the city hold a “Jobathon” like Nashville did when they created jobs where there were none before. DeBerry noted that the General Assembly was dominated by rural interests making it difficult for a bill proposed to created urban enterprise zones and tax breaks businesses that would locate in depleted areas. The article shows how DeBerry was supportive of movements that helped the disenfranchised and poor. The article foreshadows Memphis becoming a medical center.
